Elwood “Woody” L. Dahl, 82

November 04, 2024

Elwood "Woody" L. Dahl, 82, passed away peacefully at his home on October 25, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family.
Woody was born on January 14, 1942 and graduated from Lake of the Woods High School in 1960. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served his country with pride for four years. In February 1964, Woody met the love of his life, Peachie Sager, in Henderson, Nevada. They married on October 3, 1964, and soon moved to Baudette to start their family.
Woody began his business journey in 1965, joining his brother Ivan at Dahl Trucking. A few years later, in 1969, Woody and his brothers, Ivan and Julius, expanded their ventures by opening an Arctic Cat dealership. In 1973, he and Ivan purchased a gas station from Harvey Nelson. By 1983, Woody embarked on a new chapter, opening Woody's Phillips 66 station, where his friendly face greeted customers daily as he managed the business and traded cars until his retirement.
Woody cherished his daily 3:00 p.m. coffee time with friends, a close-knit group who enjoyed camaraderie and tried to "solve the world's problems" together. Woody had a voice that was instantly recognizable and loud enough to be heard above everyone. Known for his humor, Woody's wit and friendly "BS sessions" were something friends and family always looked forward to. A man of unwavering integrity, he stood by his word and was respected by all who knew him (and was always willing to wager a caramel roll whenever he was sure his opinion was right).
Upon retirement, Woody and Peachie embraced the life of snowbirds, spending winters in Avinger, Texas. There, they found a second family among a community of friends. Even in their new community he, of course, continued his 3:00 p.m. coffee tradition with new friends who grew to love the same thunderous, matter-of-fact voice of his.
Woody was preceded in death by his parents, Alf and Elsie; his brothers, Julius, Gordy, and Olaf; and his sister, Leila. He is survived by Peachie, his loving wife of over 60 years; his five children, Brock, Darin (Shonna), Julius (Kali), Betty, and Michelle (Damon) Delvecchio; his two brothers, Ivan (Charlotte) and Dennis; as well as 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Woody's legacy of kindness, humor, and steadfast character will live on in the hearts of those who knew & loved him.
A ship sails away and we see it no more, but we know it is going to some other shore. Our dear ones pass on, and we see them no more, but we know they are waiting on some other shore.
Woody will be missed by all of us.
Join us as we gather to honor and celebrate the life of an extraordinary man on Saturday, November 16th, at 1:00 p.m. at 218 Tavern in Baudette. A flag ceremony saluting Woody will precede the celebration.
